CanSkate teaches fundamental skating movements (go forward, go backward, stop, turn, spin and jump) in a group lesson format. The CanSkate program is set up in seven stages and emphasizes fun and continuous movement. It is taught by an NCCP certified professional coach and assisted by trained Program Assistants (StarSkate program skaters). A key delivery standard of the program is to ensure that participants are moving 90% of their time on the ice. This program teaches participants solid basic skating skills which compliments the training for hockey, ringette, speed skating or more intense figure skating. PrePower skating skills (part of the CanPowerskate program) are covered in CanSkate.

Participants must be 4 years of age as of program start date and be independent of their parent(s) while on the ice. Children must wear helmets (hockey helmets preferred), provide their own skates and wear appropriate clothing (water resistant mitts/gloves, snow pants, etc.).

Programs are offered at Cardel Place (levels 1 – 7 of CanSkate program) or at Huntington Hills Sportsplex (CanSkate level 4 or higher). Coaches will assess skating skills in the first class to determine level placement for new registrants in programs at Cardel Place (CanSkate 10 & 20). If unsure of level requirements for CanSkate 40 (at Huntington Hills Sportsplex), please contact the club for clarification. As the CanSkate program is an introductory program, other introductory programs are on the ice surface simultaneously.
